Krazy Daze at the Kaz Winery!

We started with a mild thunder. Getting the only 3 barrels of our Pinot pumped into a small tank. Then pumped out a single barrel of a Malbec Port. I have to say the best port I have ever made. Major black raspberry in nose and flavor, damn yummy!!! Than my daughter and our intern from Sonoma St. bottled, corked, labeled and foiled the port. It was another fire cracker hot day in Sonoma Valley. Hitting the 100 degree mark for the 3 day in arrow. Then it was time to open the tasting room for biz. So we broke for the day and will take tomorrow off to do paperwork and get the wine that we bottled to the warehouse in Sonoma. Wednesday we will bottle the Pinot that is melding together. The shared a meal with neighbors!

Get-en thin in the Vineyard!

The vines are going nuts with growth right now!

Yesterday we went in and took suckers off and thinned the East facing side of the vines. We take off the bottom 4 leaves on every new cane. This allows the sun and air to better ripen the clusters!  It also help nature to kill the dreaded mold or powdery mildew that tries to invade the cluster and destroy the grapes.

Please come to our winery so I can show you this in person. If you say you read this blog we will waive your tasting fees!

Disk that vineyard Dude!

Well this old man got on his tractor and disked the 2 foot tall weeds down under. The bugs hate it but the soil loves getting back what the weeds take from it. This is my way of giving back. I also noticed that the soil was darker in color than normal and it wasn't from the rains last week. It was from the large amount of turkey manure that I put down last November. So the soil is ready to do its thing and give back to the grape vines what is needed. We also sprayed the vines with a blend of cinnamon, peppermint, thyme, clove and citric acid to stop the threat of mildew on the grape clusters. This is the first time I used these products which have been donated by Monterey Chemical Group for the organics division. We are also testing other products which will be added to the soil to kill some bad bugs that collect in the roots of the grapes. The weather has changed and we are in the late spring warm cycle, about 80 degrees today. Next chore will be the last weed whacking around the vines.

In the Vineyard this Spring!

Well the moth of April saw only 4 days of possible freeze and we only lost 6 shoots in the entire vineyard. Last year we lost 40% of the vineyard. So we are all relieved about that as for the rain, it continues today the first day of May! It will most likely be the last rain of the season and we have only sprayed the vineyard once so far for mildew and that was 2 weeks ago. We will be spraying with an organic mixture of Rosemary oil, lemon oil, and more I will post the names of all the different things we will be adding this year! Here is the website of the organic company!

It has been organizing time at the winery!

We are putting new procedure into action and have re-evaluated how we do everything from all the crazy ways the government wants us to keep records to how we clean barrels. We have also hired an intern from Sonoma State to assist us in the vineyard and implement all the new methods of madness that we want to do at the winery. I will post more about the going-on's of the new lad.

Did you Twitter people get this post?

I double posted because I had already post this before I connected it with twitter! Please comment on the post, let me feel the love!

First Racking!

Racking wine? What is it? What does that mean? Well racking wine means to take the clearer wine out of barrel and leave behind the cloudier part. That is called the lees, which is wine that has not settled clear yet. We pump out the top 80% of a barrel and leave behind 20%. We then put the 20% into another container and let it settle out. Sometimes 50-25% of that will not settle out and it must be thrown away. We put the lees into the vineyard. The alcohol dissipates quit quickly and the bulk brakes down over time. It mainly consists of grapes parts, dead yeast and dust. All good for the soil. The clear wine or the 10%ish goes back into the barrel for more time in that barrel for ageing and more clarification time. Today is the first racking of the 2008 grapes crushed. It is a busy day but also a fun day because it will be the first time I will taste these young wines. It's a job and somebody has to do it!
